BEAR FEAST - SPRING 2008

“HONOURING MUIN - Keeper of Medicine”

Saturday, March 29th 2008

The time has come to once again honour Muin as he returns from his long winter fast. He has had to make a long journey, and will return with medicines for those who are in need.

We look forward to seeing our friends once again! The ceremony will start at about 1pm, although we will likely be there around noon-ish to set up. Quick reminders:

1. bring your favourite dish for the potluck;

2. bring a comfy chair or cushions for the circle;

3. women ARE REQUIRED to wear a skirt for the ceremony; and

4. bring along an item or two for the Giveaway blanket.

That's it for now - hope to see you there!

IMPORTANT NOTE

While our Bear Feast has previously been open to all, we have become aware that this has allowed certain elements to come into the ceremony that are creating conflict and interpersonal rivalry.

This is a very important ceremony in the traditions of the Mi'kmaq people. There is no place in this ceremony for disrespect or ego. It is vital that it be performed in a humble and respectful manner, by those who are sincerely intending to honour Muin for his gifts and sacrifice.

In olden times, this ceremony would only have been attended by those who were of the Bear Clan, and of course their families. We are therefore inviting only those who know for a fact that they are of the Bear clan, and those who have been with our circle for a long time and truly acknowledge Muin, to come to this Bear Feast. If there is someone you feel needs to be there, please confirm with us first.

We understand that there are those who look forward to this ceremony as a social occasion, and we sincerely apologize for having to limit attendance. Please understand that we take this step with deep regret.

How it went last Fall:
The spirit of the Bear was once again honoured for its long Fast and journey. Each time we bring together old friends and new friends at the ceremonies, it seems that we build strength and commitment, and perhaps new energy to continue on the Paths or journeys we are all on.

We were very pleased with the attendance, the group was smaller than before but very intimate. Thank you all for attending and helping us in honouring the Bear. Thanks for helping out with set-up, doing dishes, and all the other things that you helped out with to bring this ceremony together: the food you brought, the gifts for the Giveaway, and most of all for your presence.

How to get there:

We hold the Bear Feast at the Milford Community Hall, located at the junction of Highway 8 and Virginia Road. You can get onto Highway 8 from Highway 101 (exit 22 at Annapolis Royal) or Highway 103 (exit 19 at Liverpool).
